Philippines is somewhat experiencing the wrath of environment. In a manifesto written of the delegates of the recent World Creative Youth Forum, it quotes “that climate change is the greatest threat to the existence of all life forms on earth. We are alarmed that this grave planetary emergency facing humankind is largely ignored in many parts of the world.” In recent study being conducted by the Kalikasan Org, it shows that the Philippines, so with different countries in Southeast Asia, are likely to be one of the most affected country, and region, in the world that will experience the wrath of environment through Climate Change.

It is said that EDUCATION is a primary key in solving any problems that this world encounter. Hunger, war, environment destruction, diseases, and more may lead to a worsen condition if proper education to those not availing it was not given.

Knowing that this information was not just a mere illusion of current condition of our globe, it is also deemed that the youth must start now to act in facing these problems. Education and advocating for the betterment of the world and environment is needed. Starting with our own self was a call that most advocates addressed the young generation but since only a few reacted to that call, we must find means to empower the youth, inspire them to take even simple actions and motivating them to be a better advocate. To make them think that the world is really ours to keep and protect.

A Learning Project

Right after my graduation from College, I set everything I want to do in life just to achieve my dream – that is to pass the board exam. However, it was a rainy June when my best friend called me and asked if I can do part time teaching as a substitute instructor. And I never that knew that a simple yes to her would definitely change the way I see my life and my role in the community.

I started to teach on July of 2007. I was new with the system or on how to work in academe but somewhat I enjoy it. I always thought teaching was hard but when I started to enjoy it, I learn to love my job. However, as time passes by and semesters starting to end, I found out some problems shared by my student regarding their studies and regarding the community. It was my understanding as a mentor that made me think that life was really not easy for those persons who are really deprived of their right to know things. As an advocate of youth, I started to look for several organizations that can help me.

When my term of teaching ends on March of 2008, I leave behind a community with my students there living in a political turmoil due to a conflict of interest in the Methane Power Plant. It’s a sad fact that all of us suffer (financially and emotionally) due to the conflict that rises during those times. I leave teaching for a while and continue to pursue seeking partners for community project that I envisioned together with my friend – that is a community learning center that doesn’t only teach academic matters but also will motivate them to be empowered individual that will look back to the importance of the environment.

July of 2008, I started to work in a Compact Fluorescent Lamp Testing Laboratory here in the Philippines. As an Electrician, it’s always been a passion for me to strive and help save energy. Together with my colleague in work, we work ways to look for partners in the project I had in my mind. She was a very supportive teammate.

When the opportunity came that the Young People We Care in Ghana looked for a Youth Action Ambassador, I applied for it thinking that it will help me further in my community development. After evaluation, I passed their qualification and became their country representative. With the opportunity at hand and the trust given to me by my colleagues in Ghana, I started to push through and find several tie up partners – including the Youth Advocates for United Nations (YAUN).

YAUN is non-profit youth group that advocates the UN MDG and Youth Empowerment. With them, I started to be involved again in working close to the community. Every Saturdays, we have an outreach program for the Youth inside the depressed community in Arboretum in Quezon City. Having been involve in such activities, again, made me think more of ways to build a learning center for our community in Montalban. With the help of YAUN, I started to plan for it.

It was May of 2009, another opportunity came to me. The team I’m working with starting to migrate to other countries and yet, It was good that the World Creative Youth Forum accepted my application. WCYF is an international forum discussing several issues like environment, peace, youth empowerment, ethical living, and more. I met there several youth leaders in our country and in the world, and I’ve shared my plans to them. Now, I’m starting to regain my determination to push on this project for my students and for the environment. In that forum, it’s a sad fact that the present condition of the world is worsen because of our “lost love” to the environment. I want to help the world by bringing back that love back to the environment.

That month also, I accepted offered to me by my school and for the second time, I will again teach. Different setting, maybe different class, but again, this is a good opportunity. After all, I need a support from our local university to further establish my project – for the student and for the environment.

June of 2009, it’s a good news that Sprout added me to the roster of its E-course program. Actually, I organized many events in the past with the organizations I’m with but it’s very much different to organize it starting from myself and all I need is the right plan and right time. God’s been putting me into this present condition because I believe He will guide me all along.
The learning center for the youth will be the major project I will have before my term for YPWC ends on September. With the right group of persons I’m with now, I think everything is in place. 
